WHY THIS GUIDE EXISTS

Real UK Dental Prices, with No Sales Pitch.

UK dental fees vary wildly — a single implant can cost £1,800 in Leeds or £5,500 in central London. NHS rules differ in each of the four UK nations. Most patients walk into an appointment without knowing what they should be paying. We exist to fix that.

NHS rates verified

Sourced from NHS England, NHS Wales, NHS Scotland & HSCNI.

Private fees surveyed

Dentist Cost UK — Frequently Asked Questions

The quick answers patients search for most — NHS band charges, private price ranges and who qualifies for free care across all four UK nations.

How much does a dentist cost in the UK?

On the NHS in England and Wales you pay a fixed band charge: £27.90 (Band 1) for a check-up, £76.60 (Band 2) for fillings, root canals or extractions, and £332.10 (Band 3) for crowns, bridges or dentures. Privately, a check-up is typically £40–£150, a white filling £90–£250, a crown £400–£1,200 and a single dental implant £1,800–£3,500.

What are the NHS dental charges for 2026?

From 1 April 2026 the NHS dental charges in England and Wales are Band 1 £27.90, Band 2 £76.60 and Band 3 £332.10, with urgent treatment charged at £27.90. In Scotland examinations are free and you then pay 80% of the treatment cost up to a maximum of £384 per course. Northern Ireland charges 80% of the cost up to the same £384 maximum.

Is NHS dental treatment free?

NHS dental treatment is free for under-18s, under-19s in full-time education, people who are pregnant or had a baby in the last 12 months, and people on qualifying low-income benefits such as Universal Credit (meeting the earnings criteria), Income Support or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit. Everyone else pays the standard band charge for their nation.

Why is private dental treatment more expensive than the NHS?

NHS charges are fixed nationally and subsidised, so you pay the same band fee regardless of how complex the work is. Private fees are set by each clinic and reflect the materials used, the clinician’s experience, appointment length and location — central London is typically 30–50% above the UK average.

Are dental prices the same across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

No. England and Wales use the same three-band charge system. Scotland makes examinations free and charges 80% of treatment cost up to £384 per course. Northern Ireland also charges 80% up to £384. Every treatment page on this site lists the patient charge for all four nations.

About these figures. NHS England, NHS Wales and HSCNI band/item rates are effective from 1 April 2026. Private fee ranges are typical UK market figures from clinic surveys and may vary by clinic, region and clinical complexity.
